Filmed at various
performance venues throughout 2003, “No Such Thing As Neosoul” provides viewers with a deeper appreciation
of factors that have led the City of Brotherly Love to a dominant position in the world music scene,
thanks to its contributions to what is commonly referred to as neosoul. Harkening back to the aesthetic of soul artists
like Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder
and Minnie Riperton and on the
heels of the immeasurable success of Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia
International Records, in the mid-1990s contemporary vocalists such as D’Angelo and Erykah Badu led the charge for a new wave of performers to rise
to the top of music industry charts. Soon after, newer stars began flocking
to Philadelphia for production and songwriting assistance, leading
to numerous artistic collaborations that would clear the way for Jill Scott, Musiq, Eve and The Roots to help cement Philadelphia’s reputation as a mecca
for commercial urban hits. It is this progression that is explained and
examined closely in the film.
Featuring interviews and/or
performances by:
JILL SCOTT, URSULA RUCKER, RENNIE HARRIS, BERNARD COLLINS, SABELA, JAMES
ELAM, DAMON BENNETT, RICH MEDINA, MIKE HARRISON, MONICA PETERS, DAVE WARREN,
AL BUTLER, MICHAEL COARD and the talents of open mic participants at venues throughout the city.
